I visited Stroud today to meet with Doina Cornell, Labour Leader of Stroud Council and Chas Townley, the Councillor responsible for Council Housing. Also invited along was Ian Allan, a tenant rep on their Housing Committee.
We had a very useful discussion on campaigning to reopen the 2012 ‘debt settlement’, cancelling the bogus Council housing ‘debt’ and for government grant to fund a new generation of council homes. Stroud has been building more council homes than it has been losing to Right to Buy. It’s keen to build more council housing but it has no resources to do so.
We discussed the need to radicalise Labour’s housing programme, campaigning for a commitment to fund a large scale council house building programme. That means grant for councils rather than a competitive bidding process in which councils have to compete with housing associations.

Visit to Stroud, this is very encouraging reopening the fake “debt settlement ” and the fictitious housing debt must be cancelled, plus government housing grant must be returned, and while we are at it lifetime tenancies to give people security must be demanded, what sort of quality of life can a 5 year tenancy provide ? Sooner or later it will penetrate government skulls that council housing is the only way to house ALL of our population
